Waste collection crews issue battery disposal warning after bin lorry fire
Waste collection teams at Herefordshire Council are urging residents to dispose of batteries safely after a fire broke out in one of the county’s bin lorries last week.
The fire was caused by a lithium battery that had been incorrectly disposed of in household waste.
The crew quickly spotted the fire while carrying out collections on Crooked Well and Llewellin Road in Kington. They safely emptied the vehicle before the fire was extinguished by Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service. No one was injured, but the incident highlights the serious risks posed by batteries and vapes when they are placed in household bins or recycling sacks.
Many everyday items contain lithium batteries, including vapes, rechargeable batteries, mobile phones, tablets and power banks. If these items are put in household bins or recycling sacks, they can be crushed during the collection process, creating a serious fire risk.
Fires in bin lorries put collection crews, members of the public and emergency services at risk, as well as causing damage to vehicles and disruption to waste collections.
Fortunately, disposing of batteries correctly is quick and easy.
Residents can recycle household batteries by placing them in a clear plastic bag, such as a sandwich bag, on top of their black or green bin, or alongside their rubbish or recycling sacks on collection day. Vapes and loose batteries should be placed in separate clear bags.
Herefordshire Council’s Cabinet Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Culture and Environment, Councillor Elissa Swinglehurst, said:
“Thankfully, our crew acted quickly and safely, but this incident is a reminder that something as small as a battery can have serious consequences if it ends up in a household bin.
“By taking a few seconds to recycle batteries and vapes properly, residents can help protect our waste collection crews, reduce the risk of fires and keep our collection service running safely. It’s a simple step that makes a real difference.”
Residents are also reminded that small electrical items, batteries and vapes should never be placed in household waste or recycling bins. Information on how to recycle these items safely is available on Herefordshire Council’s website.
Herefordshire residents encouraged to get ready for changes to home phone lines
Telecare and Technology Enabled Care users may be affected by the digital switchover
Herefordshire Council is reminding people that home phone lines across the UK are changing, and all old‑style landlines will move onto a new digital network system in January 2027.
The UK Digital Switchover means all phone calls will be made over the internet instead of the old analogue landline network, which has become difficult to maintain and breaks more often. The upgrade will be by the phone companies, on a gradual ‘area by area’ basis. Residents don’t need to do anything yet – they will be contacted by their phone company.
Cllr Pete Stoddart, Herefordshire Council’s Digital Champion and Cabinet Member for Finance and Corporate Resources, said: “Most people won’t see much change, but we want to make sure everyone is aware, especially those using telecare and other Technology Enabled Care services which are vital to helping people live safely and independently at home.”
Herefordshire Council’s Technology Enabled Services (TECS) team has already made sure the 3,000 households using its ‘Lifeline’ telecare devices are ready for the digital switchover.
However, some residents using different suppliers may need extra support because older alarms and devices were designed to work with the old analogue phone system and may need upgrading by the provider, particularly if they:
- Use a medical alarm or pendant alarm
- Rely on a landline for essential communication
- Have hearing aids that work with your phone
- Use assistive technology connected to your phone line
- Have mobility issues that make phone access crucial
- Live alone and depend on your home phone for safety
Cllr Stoddart added: “If you’re unsure about how a device in your home or business might be affected, please contact the equipment supplier or device manufacturer to find out whether it will still work on a digital phone line. Although we’ve already ensured Council TECS users are digitally-ready, we want to ensure everyone who uses this technology is aware.”
“For most residents, the switch will be simple, and your phone company will guide you. We’re advising anyone using a private telecare to contact their provider to confirm their equipment is compatible and act early if any updates are needed. We want everyone in Herefordshire to stay safe, connected, and supported during this change.”

Changes to cashless parking in the county
JustPark is the new official cashless parking provider for council-owned parking spaces across Herefordshire.
Parking sessions can be booked via the JustPark app. This is available on iOS and Android which is free to download.
Payment through the JustPark website and via calling a local rate number – 01432 805339, is also available, ensuring residents can pay using their preferred method.
Those who frequently choose to pay for parking via app should download the JustPark app as soon as they can, and only from their official app store.
There will be no change in pricing for cashless parking, and motorists should be assured that their parking may also still be paid for by cash and with cards.

Age UK Herefordshire & Worcestershire and the ‘Warm Homes’ programme
The programme’s aim is to help people who are living in or at risk of fuel poverty. The service consists of a Home Energy Check where one of our Handy people will assess the clients house, give energy saving information and tips and install any home energy equipment that is needed. Some of the equipment available are draft excluders, energy efficient light bulbs, radiator reflectors and plenty more. This service is completely free – including the equipment and installation!
They can also offer free benefit entitlement checks as part of the Warm Homes programme to ensure they are getting all they are entitled to.
NB: This service is already underway, but they are looking at ways to promote this within the community.

New for 2023 there is also a scheme called “Connected for Warmth” which is funded by National Grid as part of their affordable warmth obligations.
The scheme has no strings attached and is FREE for all residents in Council lower Tax Bands of A-D.

- Must be owner occupier or privately rented

- Other measures are also available, these are Reflective Radiator Panels, Low Energy Light Bulbs, Draughtproofing and Chimney balloons.
- Other outcomes for the householder is a pre EPC and post EPC

We are all potential victims of fraud, especially during these hard financial times. So it is comforting to know that West Mercia Police have a website devoted to understanding more about this.

Fraud comes in many guises: from criminal Door-to-Door canvassers or phoney emails from what appears to be your bank, to romance scams aimed at scamming the lonely and vulnerable in the community. The West Mercia Police website gives insight about these various forms of fraud & scams, how to spot them, and how to prevent them from doing any further damage.
As well as learning about how to avoid them, there are also links to further information on:

- how you can warn others by reporting it

Ledbury Recycling Centre
YOU MUST BOOK YOUR SLOT ONLINE IN ADVANCE here. You will need to enter your PostCode, find your address from the pull-down list of properties, select the centre from the centres available and also enter your car registration number. You will be given the available days/time-slots (that have not already been booked). Simply select one, and confirm reservation, and you will be emailed an appointment pass which is numbered and which will need to be printed and displayed on your car dash. (or shown on a mobile phone when asked at the gate). NB: The allocation of slots has increased to 1 visit per week per household. Please remember to turn up at the correct time.
